Publisher's summary

Combining the drama of The God of Animals with the powerful realism of Chosen by a Horse, award-winning poet Jana Harris tells the inspiring story of her twenty-four-year relationship with a troubled but beautiful, blood-red feral mare who, in spite of her difficult past, has a talent for healing and helping every human and other being she comes into contact with.

When True Colors arrived at Harris' farm, she was in dire shape. She had survived a range fire that had scarred her head, ears, and lungs, and she was terrified of most people, especially men. True Colors sensed demons hiding in everything from the scent of fabric softener to a gate in a fence, and her will to escape was enormous. In Horses Never Lie About Love, Harris lyrically recounts how this wounded, implacable beast nevertheless held a magical influence over the other horses of the ranch and how she eased uncannily into the role of mother after having a foal. In time she became the heart of the ranch - now thirty-three years old, she is a matriarchal presence without whom the other horses cannot sleep at night, and whose quiet wisdom transmits strength of character that transcends the thin line between animals and the humans they love.

Started off promising

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

Enjoyed the beginning and the premise of the story, however it began to languish with too many mishaps and elaborate equine veterinary details....

Not the best

This is not at all what I thought it would be. Simply the story of horse breeders who seem to sell horses indiscriminately with apparently no concern for suitability or the welfare of the horse. Sending a horse that you “loved” (Kermit) off on a two-day trip in a stock trailer with someone who doesn’t know anything about horses is just not okay. I really didn’t like this book.

I loved the story, the love and the experiences!

Not only was I entertained, I learned so much about raising and handling mares, stallions and foals, as well as the qualities of an anchor mare in contributing to the well-being of the herd. I aspire to be like TC in my handling and training horses! Thank you for sharing your experiences with us!

Disappointingly little heatwarming story

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

The title says it is a heartwarming story about a remarkable horse, but the book treats her more as background color material. Perhaps I was too put-off by the snobbery and seeming incompetence of the author's horsemanship. For someone who claimed such love for the horses, it is hard to fathom why they were put in situations that were so dangerous to them and the humans around them.

Would you ever listen to anything by Jana Harris again?

No.

Better know horses

What disappointed you about Horses Never Lie About Love?

If you don't know about care etc of horses this book will make no sense at all. I understood the book but thought it was boring and repetitive..would not recommend and I love horses and everything about them.

More of a journal

It kinda of reads like she turned her journal into a book. It was interesting but definitely not a true story line beyond the journal entry feel

Worst book ever

Such a horrible book, poorly written and seems to have nothing to do with the title. It sounds like she is complaining about everything in her life up to the end of the book. I never did understand what it was about. Just a lot of rambling and noise.
