Publisher's Summary

A man, a dog, and the lengths to which love will go to sacrifice for its companion.
Finding Gobi is the miraculous tale of Dion Leonard, a seasoned ultramarathon runner who crosses paths with a stray dog while competing in a 155-mile race through the Gobi Desert in China. The lovable pup, who would later earn the name Gobi, proved that what she lacked in size, she more than made up for in heart, as she went step for step with Dion over the Tian Shan Mountains, across massive sand dunes, through yurt villages and the black sands of the Gobi Desert, keeping pace with him for nearly 80 miles.
As Dion witnessed the incredible determination and heart of this small animal, he found his own heart undergoing a change as well. Whereas in the past these races were all about winning and being the best, his goal now was to make sure his and Gobi's friendship continued well after the finish line. He found himself letting Gobi sleep in his tent at night, giving her food and water out of his own limited supply, and carrying her across numerous rivers, even when he knew it would mean putting him behind in the race or, worse, prevent him from finishing at all.
Although Dion did not cross the finish line first, he felt he had won something even greater - a new outlook on life and a new friend that he planned on bringing home as soon as arrangements were made. However, before he could take her home, Gobi went missing in the sprawling Chinese city where she was being kept. Dion, with the help of strangers and a viral outpouring of assistance on the Internet, set out to track her down and reunite forever with the amazing animal that changed his life and proved to him and the world that miracles are possible.

What an amazing story!

This book was such a blast to listen to and I highly recommend it. If you don't know about Gobi, she's a stray dog that started following an ultramarathoner named Deon in the second day of an ultramarathon in China. If I remember my numbers, Gobi completed 77 miles of the race at Deon's side! During that time a bond was formed and Deon promised Gobi that he'd figure out how to get her home to Edinburgh. This book is about the race, Deon's life, Gobi's dramatic and heartbreaking post-race disappearance, and Deon's fight to get Gobi home.

I learned about Deon and Gobi when this story first started going viral; I've supported them every since and have followed them on various social media platforms. I love hearing about Gobi and figured this book would contain little new information (to me)...I was wrong. This book has a lot of new content, so if you're new to Gobi or already a superfan, you'll enjoy this book! If you love reading animal stories, you'll love this book. If you want to read about competitive sports, you'll love this book. If you enjoy biographies, you'll enjoy this book. Bottom line: check out this book.

Simon Bubb does a fantastic job narrating. His Australian accent is enjoyable and easy for this American listener to understand.

An Australian ultrarunner and an ultrarunning dog

Where does Finding Gobi rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

This is a story about an Australian ultrarunner and a stray ultrarunning dog, a 250 mile ultra-race across the Gobi Desert in China, the Australian's Dutch wife back home in Scotland, devoted strangers in China who became devoted friends, and the good that can come from a viral story on the internet. Whether you've been following Gobi's story since the beginning, or you've never heard about Gobi before, you will LOVE the book! It's appeal is far broader that just for people who love dogs. It is also a story about ultra racing. It is a story about how the internet and crowd funding can make really good things happen.
