Publisher's summary

Uncensored, uncontained, and thoroughly demented, the memoirs of Paul Krassner are back in an updated and expanded edition. Paul Krassner, "father of the underground press" (People magazine), founder of the Realist, political radical, Yippie, and award-winning stand-up satirist, shares his stark-raving adventures with the likes of Lenny Bruce, Abbie Hoffman, Norman Mailer, Ken Kesey, Groucho Marx, and Squeaky Fromme, revealing the patriarch of counterculture’s ultimate, intimate, uproarious life on the fringes of society.

Whether he’s writing about his friendship with controversial comic Lenny Bruce, introducing Groucho Marx to LSD, his investigation of Scientology, or John Kennedy’s cadaver, no subject is too sacred to be skewered by Krassner. And yet his stories are soulful and philosophical, always authentic to his iconoclastic brand of personal journalism.

As Art Spiegelman said, "Krassner is one of the best minds of his generational to be destroyed by madness, starving, hysterical, naked - but mainly hysterical. His true wacky, wackily true autobiography is the definitive book on the '60s."

Hilarious and GobSmacking Memoir

Paul Krassner: Lenny Bruce’s wingman, founder of the Yippie Party, Merry Prankster, Chicago 7 Witness On Acid, founder of The Realist, pioneer of the underground abortion network when such operations were illegal... writes his story.

Krassner could be called the “Waldo” of the American Left— he's in every picture, every snapshot of history— as well as the radical light of the American comedy scene. His misadventures in counter-culture include encounters with Larry Flynt, Scientology, and Charlie Manson.

Comedy is Paul's indomitable method of coping with the absurd and the tragic. His memoir is laugh-out-loud funny and philosophically deep. Just listening to the introduction had me giggling, and contemplating what it is to be aware.

You may wonder where Krassner's title comes from; it's a good story. After Life magazine published a favorable article of Paul, the FBI shot off a letter to the editor, complaining: “To classify Krassner as a social rebel is far too cute. He is a nut, a raving, unconfined nut.”

Anything J. Edgar Hoover condemns has gotta be on your reading list!

Crazy for the Raving Nut

What made the experience of listening to Confessions of a Raving, Unconfined Nut the most enjoyable?

Paul's misadventures gave me great pleasure. Feel I should rave about them. Want to know more about the Groucho connection! David Letwin's voice was so right for the book. I listened obsessively and felt the river of history sweep by...so great to capture all the people and feelings that went past.
