Publisher's summary

A cross-country hitchhiking journey with America’s most beloved weirdo.

John Waters is putting his life on the line. Armed with wit, a pencil-thin mustache, and a cardboard sign that reads "I’m Not Psycho", he hitchhikes across America from Baltimore to San Francisco, braving lonely roads and treacherous drivers. But who should we be more worried about, the delicate film director with genteel manners or the unsuspecting travelers transporting the Pope of Trash?

Before he leaves for this bizarre adventure, Waters fantasizes about the best and worst possible scenarios: A friendly drug dealer hands over piles of cash to finance films with no questions asked, a demolition-derby driver makes a filthy sexual request in the middle of a race, a gun-toting drunk terrorizes and holds him hostage, and a Kansas vice squad entraps and throws him in jail. So what really happens when this cult legend sticks out his thumb and faces the open road? His real-life rides include a gentle 81-year-old farmer who is convinced Waters is a hobo, an indie band on tour, and the perverse filmmaker’s unexpected hero: A young, sandy-haired Republican in a Corvette.

Laced with subversive humor and warm intelligence, Carsick is an unforgettable vacation with a wickedly funny companion - and a celebration of America’s weird, astonishing, and generous citizenry.

Another great ride with John Waters

Would you listen to Carsick again? Why?

Of course! I love the way his mind works!

Who was your favorite character and why?

The fictional animal rescuer. To say this woman is dedicated, is an understatement.

Which scene was your favorite?

When John goes to Walmart.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I am always captivated by the masterful storytelling of Mr. John Waters and this book was no different. It made me want to start traveling the country like a gypsy.

Any additional comments?

I appreciate the narration by the author.

Travels with a Magical Asshole 😊

This is a truly entertaining account of a couple of fictitious trips across the country and one nonfiction trip across the country. Including some really different people, liberals and conservatives. Even aliens. ❤️❤️❤️❤️

Enjoyable trip!

I love the brain & wit of John Waters. This is like taking a trip together! The fictional start (more like 2/3 of the book) took me by surprise, but it's easy to get into if you like Waters" style.

My only complaint: the real life stories are thin. I can't help but think there were some really good stories left untold.

Insanely offensive

...and just what I expected. Vulgar, crass, disgusting, and in some parts, utterly hilarious. Waters doing his own narration was a must -- had someone else tried to perform this, it simply wouldn't have worked. The way he broke the story up into three sections was quite clever. Now I need to go watch some of Waters' older films...

A good laugh

John waters is so comfortable in his skin and as he explores the hitchhiking adventure his narrative is hysterically funny, quite graphic and wild. The good and bad rides were pushing the imagination to its limit. Comparatively the real rides were a relief.
It was a bit too obscene for me so I didn't give him a five.
Overall good humor and enjoyable story

Disgustingly Entertaining and Hilarious

In true John Waters fashion this book takes you along in the passenger seat as if John were right there sharing the moments on the road. Truly entertaining, hilarious and sometimes down right filthy this book in two words, John Waters.

Hilarious

If you could sum up Carsick in three words, what would they be?

Funny, gross and depraved.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Carsick?

John Water's unlikely friendship with a young man who drives him across country.

What about John Waters’s performance did you like?

Everything. The man is a master storyteller and just the cadence of his voice is hysterical.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

It'll make you puke with excitement.

Any additional comments?

The funniest book I have listened to all year!

Best Enjoyed as an Audiobook

Where does Carsick rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

My favorite audiobook experience in my many years of membership because John Waters himself was the reader.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Carsick?

The "Bad Rides" animal rescuer was so right on, and I love animal rescuers.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Funny, outrageous, and unexpectedly sentimental from beginning to end.
