Publisher's summary

At only five years old, Saroo Brierley got lost on a train in India. Unable to read or write or recall the name of his hometown or even his own last name, he survived alone for weeks on the rough streets of Calcutta before ultimately being transferred to an agency and adopted by a couple in Australia.

Despite his gratitude, Brierley always wondered about his origins. Eventually, with the advent of Google Earth, he had the opportunity to look for the needle in a haystack he once called home and pore over satellite images for landmarks he might recognize or mathematical equations that might further narrow down the labyrinthine map of India. One day, after years of searching, he miraculously found what he was looking for and set off to find his family.

A Long Way Home is a moving, poignant, and inspirational true story of survival and triumph against incredible odds. It celebrates the importance of never letting go of what drives the human spirit: Hope.

Nicely done!

This book is a wonderful story, easy to follow, interesting and heart breaking. It was easy to bond with the character and to feel his pain and yet admire his determination. I didn't want to finish it and immediately started to look for other similar books. Well worth one's time!

Captivating biography

Intense story of survival and perseverance. How does a 5 year-old survive alone in the inner city. I agonized thinking about that part of his life. The fortunate circumstances of his quick adoption were gratifying. Unfortunately, it doesn’t work that smoothly currently. For many years, I have been associated with foster and adopted youth. There is often a hole in their heart – a missing piece –wondering about their birth parents or early life. Fortunately for the author, he was able to successfully search, find his birth family and put closure to the missing pieces.

Well-Written and Fascinating Search

Would you consider the audio edition of A Long Way Home to be better than the print version?

This amazing story, with its blend of modern technology and old-world lifestyle, and its glimpse of ordinary people who made a difference in the lives of others, was a joy to listen to. Hard to tell a story like this with enough intimacy of thoughts and experiences.. This was very well done.

Good

Heart wrenching story of a young boy. We all learn from our life experiences but it sure seems like some have greater challanges than others. So much missed in his birth home life yet so many opportunities by being in a country of opportunity.

Google Earth (and us) Win

Only in our century is this possible. I think about this book frequently, especially when the author found his mother again. It's well written and covers the entire experience. The author has an amazing memory for a very early traumatic experience and uses it to find what he lost. Now he has more than ever.

Very touching Story

Where does A Long Way Home rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

It is one of the first non-fiction books I have listened to and therefore it's difficult to compare it. But it's definitely a book I really enjoyed and felt. I have already recommended this book to other people and it also inspired me to research Saroo further and watch various News Reports of him and talks he gave himself.

Who was your favorite character and why?

I guess Saroo himself was my favorite character. I really liked his character and the - although it seems a bit compulsive - fact that he never gave up.

Which scene was your favorite?

Oh, there are quite a few candidates for that, but I guess my top scene was Saroo finding his hometown on Google Earth.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I laughed and I cried several times.

Excellent Audio

This audio was excellent and the narrating was also. It must have been so scary to get lost and end up losing your family and getting adopted to another family in another country. The memoir of him is excellent and everything his life from 5years until he went to college it's a great On how everything turn out. You won't be disappointed listening.
