Publisher's summary

As the landlord of The Dragon's Lair and leader of The Black Dragons Motorcycle Club, Axel Carmichael has seen it all and done it all. He's a respected and experienced dom. Nothing shocks him anymore, and nobody catches him off guard.

When Bayden rides up to The Dragon's Lair on a bike worth more than most men earn in a year, and immediately demonstrates that he has far more attitude than sense, it's easy for Axel to write him off as a silly little rich boy who's about to get himself killed.

But, there's more to Bayden than meets the eye. He's no silly little boy, rich or otherwise, and werewolves aren't easy to kill.

A rare 5 star review

Where does Axel's Pup rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

I don't give many 5 star reviews for audiobooks. It seems like it the story is great then the narrator won't be. If we have an awesome narrator the story won't be a 5 star effort. For once everything came together. And let me tell you, with Axel's Pup already being one of my favorite books I was really worried about this. Happily though I get to give both the narrator (who is new to me) and the book 5 stars!

What was one of the most memorable moments of Axel's Pup?

I've re-read this book so many times that when I found out it was available for audio I purchased it right away without even having a credit left. Yes, I don't mind spending my hard earned money for this!
My favorite moments in the book are when Bayden does penance and his big punishment after the second fight with Ford. These are what sealed the deal with me to how much Axel and Bayden belonged together.
The hottest moment is when Axel and Bayden pretend Axel is a wolf as well and Axel actually cuts his pants off. Woo! Hot! Fanning myself!

What about Chris Clog’s performance did you like?

He got the voices right and the feel of the characters. Bayden is not weak. He might be a sub but he is also a strong character. I loved how the narrator did not make him sound weak or give him a lisp or something like that. Axel's voice was perfect.

There were very small issues. I few times in the beginning he said Alex instead of Axel. I caught that probably because I love Axel so much. When Axel and Bayden's mom speak there is two lines delivered in her voice when it's actually Axel speaking. Easy to miss and did not distrupt the story at all.

I will admit at the very first I was thrown off. I knew the author was from the UK. I knew the book is set over there. Duh, so when I heard the accent it threw me. I actually paused the book to brace myself. I've never owned an audio book not being US accent. I am so glad I went on. It wouldn't have been right to have an US accent with the UK words. I just had to adjust.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I always have a strong reaction to good books. During this listen I even tapped back to listen to some parts a second time because they were so wonderful. This is the kind of book that allows you to really feel what the characters are going through.

Any additional comments?

I know the author said she is planning a second book. That made my month. While this book is great having more of Bayden and Axel, even the secondary characters is what's needed right now. I would love to see Hale with a wolf! Could you imagine that? OMG!
The world might not be perfect, but being able to escape into a book like this makes it tolerable.

My favorite book

I bought this e-book when it was first published and have read it so many times I have actually lost count. When I heard it was going to be produced by Audible I was so excited that I checked the site everyday to see if it was out yet. I was not disappointed in Audible's finished product. I thought the narrator did a excellent job with a wonderful story. I have finished listening to it and am trying to stop myself from just starting over and listening to it again (I have a lot of books I haven't listened to yet).
This is a fabulous book! I stayed up way too late 2 nights in a row to finish it and resented the fact that real life was getting in the way of my listening. I cannot think of enough superlatives to describe this book; it is my new favorite.
I loved both of the MC"s and grew to appreciate most of the secondary characters as well (so glad this is book 1 in a new series). The book showcases both Axel and Bayden's point of view seamlessly and just made me love them both even more. This is a stand alone novel with no cliff hangers(I always like knowing whether the story will end or not). Even though this is an almost 21 hour listen, I was disappointed when it ended(not by the ending itself,I just didn't want the journey to end).
I am sorry to say that, if shifter's did exist, the world Ms. Dare created would probably be right on the mark. Human's have, down through history(and still today), exhibited an "us verses them" mentality; with the "Us" group always able to justify whatever they have done to the "them" group. Werewolves are firmly in the "them"group with no rights and no recourse in human law to protect them; Bayden has lived his whole life knowing he (and his kind) are considered lesser beings. It is heartbreaking to see how human's have devastated werewolf society and deluded themselves about the reality of their actions. As with most conquered people, the history books reflect the winners point of view and most humans have either excepted the conventional view of wolves or thought the "pack laws" a thing of the past( like Axel). But, as in real life, there have always been shining examples of people who look passed the conventional viewpoint and refused to defend the indefensible actions and beliefs of their own kind; Axel is a shining light and I loved him.
Bayden is doing the best he can in an almost impossible situation, refusing to let human's break him but still so damaged by his life time of abuse that it is difficult for him to trust a human. He is submissive to Axel and desperately wants to please him and he makes several missteps trying to be more like a human thinking that is what Axel wants. I loved Bayden and my heart hurt for him. This book is not filled with stereotypes and cardboard cutout characters but beings who seem real(and ones I would like to meet).
This is not a BDSM sex story, it is a romance in the finest sense of the word. Yes, there is sex in the story but it is not the main focus of the
story;the relationship is the focus and it is wonderful.
If you like Shifter/human stories, M/M love stories with some BDSM and leather thrown in for good measure, and strong, believable main characters you won't go wrong by buying this book.
I had to edit my review by saying I have listened to this story multiple times; usually re-listen very 6 months or so. I have never reread(before the audio version came out) or re-listened to a book so many times in my life; this truly is my FAVORITE BOOK OF ALL TIMES.

One of my Favorite Books Read by an AMAZING voice

If you could sum up Axel's Pup in three words, what would they be?

Sexy, Beautiful, Satisfying

What did you like best about this story?

One of Kim Dare's faults in past books is setting up a couple and then leaving the story to your imagination to finish. In this book she finally sets up a couple and lets the story take the time it takes to tell the story of how their relationship came to be and what that means for each of her main characters. And she doesn't skimp on the background characters either!

Have you listened to any of Chris Clog’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Yes. I ADORED his voice in the other two books he has performed so far. In this story he had a lot to live up to because I had already read the story and had my own idea of how the characters should sound. Clog got it perfectly!

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes. Unfortunately it was too long. I listened to it over four days and could barely put it down. I'm on my second go around now.

Any additional comments?

If you like BDSM and hot men who truly love and care for each other, get this book. Love this book. I promise you will not be disappointed.

Beautiful story. Great narration.

I loved this book. The only thing that it lacks is humor. But it has enough of everything else to make that inconsequential.

Awesome book

This is a well thought out story, Honest emotions ,very human and shifter feelings and situations. The book pulls you in and Never Lets go. Having it read to you on audio brings out an even more real feel to the story . Well worth the money spent. Hope there's more from all the characters in a book 2

A must try!

Very well done, it was engaging storyline with just the right amount of kink.
The narrator was a good choice, just the right accent for where the story takes place.
I chose this book for the wear factor, and found a new favorite listen in my library.

Am i missing something?

So... I don't think i have poor taste in books. I've always considered myself open minded.
I've always thought of myself as fairly reasonable at knowing how to enjoy even a less then average or average read.

Why then am i so torn as to why i just can not stand this book. I read all these wonderful reviews about this book and just am baffled as to what in the world am i missing. Is it me? Am i an awful person for not understanding at all what others are seeing in this book.

I am open minded about the subject matters in this book but Omg do i find the writing, the characters, the world building and just everything as a whole to be poorly written, unbelievable and cringey.

I gave this book 7 valuable hour's of my time and that entire 7 hours i felt like i was suffering through trying to get through this read. I can't finish this, there is just no way, nothing about this has been appealing, interesting or sexy. In fact i was consistently annoyed.

I hate that i hate this book. I think I'm a poor judge of quality now though because of how many people love this book that i must not know anything about what makes a good book now. Or maybe it's just not for. I really did try. But everything about this book was just like nails on a chalkboard to me.

Still In Shock - Don’t Dismiss This Book

Ok, so I got this and missed the “werewolf” thing. As soon as it’s mentioned my eyes rolled. I thought, “Oh God... Really?”

I am SO GLAD I kept going! I worried it was going to be like Gay-Twilight (in other words, ‘Twilight.’). No. This was well written, compelling characters, a world of politics, a whole world of discrimination, and love.

I’ve never been bothered by, but didn’t understand a full time dom/sub relationship. I understood it for the very short time master/slave sex game - but not as a lifestyle. When I say “I didn’t understand” I don’t mean I disagreed with it - I mean I literally had no idea what was really involved or how it worked. I feel like no other book could have helped me understand the dynamic and possibilities in that kind of relationship better than this could have.

I’m so glad I missed the werewolf thing. I probably would have kept looking because I was being “judgy.” I’ll try not to make that mistake again.

This is what D/s is about

First, this is set in Wales and the motorcycle club is the European style of riding together and brotherhood, far less criminally inclined than their stereotypical American counterparts. For fans of American MC romance that might be a let down. For me it was awesome.

I was expecting a good story from the reviews but holy moly this was an excellent book! The pace was relaxed but steady. There was so much depth to the story that I wasn't expecting; the social impacts of being a wolf, the struggle to communicate not just between two very different people but between two species with different terminology and a rocky history. The need to belong and to have, to protect, pride meeting submission. But above all, Dare wrote a beautifully responsible Dom. Axel is a shining example of a Dom who understands that his role in the relationship is the harder one. Being a Dom isn't just about getting what you want, it's about caring for and protecting your charge, being responsible for every part of them in addition to yourself. I don't know if it's possible to make a character more of a shining example than Dare did with Axel.

If you're interested in BDSM, this is a great book to learn what it's truly about and what it means. If you're into the scene, this book is a reminder of everything it can be, and the danger it can hold if used irresponsibly. Even though the lifestyle D/s isn't for me this story reminded me of all the things I love about kink and the life.
