Story
I Am Restored tells the untold story of how Lecrae's past nearly ruined his future—until he learned that the wounds we carry can have the potential to be unlikely guides to healing and freedom for ourselves and others. He documents the shattering yet hopeful story of how he faced the scars of his past—sexual abuse, physical trauma, addiction, and depression—and emerged more human than ever. This is a hopeful, inspiring charge to start your journey to healing today. No matter what your past has held, God is near you, he hears you, and he's not done writing your story.

Two-time GRAMMY winning hip-hop artist and best-selling author Lecrae had inspired millions with his redemptive and gut-honest art. But when his personal life spun into chaos, he was forced to face the buried impact of the unhealed wounds - sexual abuse, physical trauma, addiction, and depression - that threatened to tear it all apart. Along the way, he realized the wounds we all carry through life have the potential to be unlikely guides to healing and freedom for ourselves and others.

Story
Today, our generation is seeing a surge of people walking away from the Christian faith. But what’s repelling people isn’t Jesus; it’s that what is often propagated as mainstream Christianity is simply not worthy of His name. Jesus is the most admired figure in history. He is also the most ignored, weaponized, reinterpreted, and misappropriated figure in history. The question is . . . who do you think He is? In Dangerous Jesus, Kevin “KB” Burgess―award-winning rapper, podcaster, and international speaker―reintroduces us to the true Jesus, the one who poses a living threat to the status quo.

His grandfather’s lynching in the deep South, the murders of his two older brothers, and his verbally harsh and absent father all worked together to form Jason Wilson’s childhood. But it was his decision to acknowledge his emotions and yield to God’s call on his life that made Wilson the man and leader he is today. As the founder of one of the country’s most esteemed youth organizations, Wilson explains the dangers men face in our culture’s definition of “masculinity” and gives listeners hope that healing is possible.

Instead, he was conquered by them and communicated without composure - hurting those he loved and himself. This went on until he renewed his mind by releasing years of past trauma. His life and relationships were transformed when he learned how to master his emotions and express them with self-control. In the process, Jason became a better husband, father, and leader.

We are surrounded by toxic stories and bad cultural thinking. We’re held back by incomplete theology. But does it have to be like that? Is frustration the end of the story? In the face of confusion and injustice, we can lose sight of our true narrative - the one that started in a garden and wants to make our real lives better today. Activist and recording artist Sho Baraka wrestles deeply and honestly with these questions, gives you permission to do the same, and shows a hard-earned path to creative change. On the outside, he seemed invincible: he escaped his abusive father, went pro in the NFL, and broke into the glamorous world of Hollywood. Publisher's summary
If you live for people's acceptance, you'll die from their rejection.
Two-time Grammy-winning rap artist, Lecrae, learned this lesson through more than his share of adversity - childhood abuse, drugs and alcoholism, a stint in rehab, an abortion, and an unsuccessful suicide attempt. Along the way, Lecrae attained an unwavering faith in Jesus and began looking to God for affirmation.
Now as a chart-topping industry anomaly, he has learned to ignore the haters and make peace with his craft. The rap artist holds nothing back as he divulges the most sensitive details of his life, answers his critics, shares intimate handwritten journal entries, and powerfully models how to be Christian in a secular age.
This is the story of one man's journey to faith and freedom.

Story
His grandfather’s lynching in the deep South, the murders of his two older brothers, and his verbally harsh and absent father all worked together to form Jason Wilson’s childhood. But it was his decision to acknowledge his emotions and yield to God’s call on his life that made Wilson the man and leader he is today. As the founder of one of the country’s most esteemed youth organizations, Wilson explains the dangers men face in our culture’s definition of “masculinity” and gives listeners hope that healing is possible.

By all appearances, Fieldy had the life. But he was on the dark path of excess, alienating friends, families, and loved ones, nearly destroying himself and the band. It took an unexpected tragedy to straighten him out: the death of his father, a born-again Christian, to a mysterious illness. Following his father's dying wish, Fieldy found God. Filled with the spirit of his new faith, Fieldy quit drugs and drinking cold turkey, and found the best part of himself.

Story
In the 1990s, a “purity industry” emerged out of the white evangelical Christian culture. Purity rings, purity pledges, and purity balls came with a dangerous message: girls are potential sexual “stumbling blocks” for boys and men, and any expression of a girl’s sexuality could reflect the corruption of her character. This message traumatized many girls - resulting in anxiety, fear, and experiences that mimicked the symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder - and trapped them in a cycle of shame.

Jim Daly, president and CEO of Focus on the Family, is an expert in fatherhood - in part because his own 'fathers' failed him so badly. His biological dad was an alcoholic. His stepfather deserted him. His foster father accused Jim of trying to kill him. All were out of Jim's life by the time he turned 13. Isn't it odd - and reminiscent of the hand of God - that the director of the leading organization on family turned out to be a guy whose own background as a kid and son were pretty messed up?

Inspiring Testimony
This book inspired me to dig even deeper in my faith. I've always struggled with legalism and what it actually means to be saved. Not only did this book give me an idea of what pursuing God looks like, but also inspired me to dig even deeper into the word of God to find the answers to the questions I've been afraid to ask.

My whole family listened with me!
I have been a fan for years and have admired from a far so I was excited to get the book. It was not what I expected. First this hopefully is not the last book Lecrae reads. He is a good narrator. Second the isn't a "Christian" book. This was a book about a journey and he was vulnerable enough to share with us the honest details. If you don't like rap, you still can find this book awesome. It talks about so many topics that you never hear men speak on. He doesn't try and make himself a hero as a matter of fact he does the opposite. But in the end you will walk away inspired to do more with your life.

This was a great listen. But the last chapter is the most powerful. It really is an excellent setup for a followup book on Culture Creation and Influence... a setup for a more exhaustive exploration on the biblical worldview Lecrae presents here.

Wow, I never would have thought...
What made the experience of listening to Unashamed the most enjoyable?
Lecrae expressed his emotions very well while reading.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Unashamed?
How often Lecrae was in trouble with the law (cops, etc)
Which scene was your favorite?
When Lecrae was confronted/called by God and fell to his knees under the preaching of James White (not of AOmin, which is one of my favorite theologians, but of Christ Our King Comm. Chuch). In short, God chose to save Lecrae, that is amazing.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
Jesus is a perfect Savior because God's grace is sufficient.
Any additional comments?
Lecrae is an amazing and I have more respect for him than I've ever had. I will continue to pray for him, his family and his work. I got a better explanation of why he makes the music he makes, and I know why we differ. He and I view walking in holiness a little differently. He explains holiness (the secular/sacred divide) in the last chapter. I'm familiar with his theology, being Reformed myself, so him acknowledging God's sovereign choice to do certain things in his life was refreshing.

This book was absolutely amazing, so honest and humbling. I love everything about it! Lecrae masterfully recounts his life, regrets and triumphs, with amazing poetry and rawness. I loved hearing his story, and how he peeled back all the layers and facets of what it means to be a Christian in this world. Highly recommend this book

His openess about his struggles and vulnerability in every page was incredible. I highly recommend this book especially if you have a young teenager into early adulthood! God Bless you Lecrae!!! Thank you so much for opening your heart and allowing God to use you! Much love and respect!
