Editorial Reviews

When people think Loveless, by My Bloody Valentine, they typically think loud, loud and louder. They think groundbreaking, band breaking, masterpiece. Shawn Taylor takes a very intimate approach to his exploration of the album. He includes personal anecdotes and opinions, as well excerpts from interviews with Belinda Butcher, Kevin Shields, and others. E. M. Summerer's baritone narration mirror's the author's intentionally conversational tone. His casual, friendly voice moves easily from exposition to interview and back again. Anyone who loves the album Loveless will enjoy learning more about the context in which it was written as well as the rather fascinating reception it received after it was released.

Publisher's Summary

Loveless remains an enigma, 15 years after its release - an album so influential and groundbreaking that its chief creator, Kevin Shields, has been unable or unwilling to release an official follow-up. In his book, Mike McGonigal talks to all the members of My Bloody Valentine in an almost certainly futile attempt to get at the essence of this extraordinary record.

Told equally pre, mid, and post-Loveless

Mike McGonical is absolutely the right person to write this story, being equal parts in on the band before, friends of the band members, yet far away enough from it to not have a biased slant on the album. He paints the scene flawlessly, and this is the most concentrated source of information on the album in current existence.
