If you could sum up Marilyn in three words, what would they be?

Smarter than perceived.

What other book might you compare Marilyn to and why?

I think she was a lot more astute than people give her credit. She used her 'skill' to get what she wanted. I am jealous. As a 'plain' woman, I could never achieve what she did.

Any additional comments?

I really dislike that we treat beauty as if it were a talent that was worked for and achieved with pride.

Marilyn by Gloria! Great Perspective!

I am not a Marilyn buff by any means. So when I saw a book about her written by Gloria Steinem I was interested and it proved to be a great listen. I couldn't put it down. I learned a ton about Marilyn that I never considered. It was really about Norma Jeane! It was also interesting to hear the upbringing and background on her. It made me feel sad that she departed this world without a better understanding of herself. Her photo is everywhere. I even own some Marilyn memorabilia and although she is forever infamous. This book reminded me of the girl, the woman before fame who probably only wanted love and family. Really heartbreaking. Again, if you are a MM history buff you probably know all of this info. But for novice MM admirers such as myself. This book brought on perspective and reminds us that all these celebrities are just people. Sometimes more damaged than they appear. Great book! Great writing! Great POV from Gloria !
