Publisher's summary

Adonis Morgan used to be a hero. As The Phenom, he kept the Arizona desert safe from trouble, masked or otherwise. But it didn't take. Now, he lives among the rest of us, keeping his head down, avoiding trouble. But trouble has a way of finding him in author Frank Byrns' Adonis Morgan: Nobody Special from Pro Se Productions.

From the lonely boulevards of Hollywood to the deadly streets of Jefferson Falls, these five stories follow Morgan's journey from hero to stuntman to cab driver, each step more desperate than the last, before finally finding himself on the most treacherous path of all: a campaign trail that leads him right back to where it all started. An extraordinary man searching desperately for an ordinary life makes Adonis Morgan: Nobody Special a thrilling, action-packed collection and a must have for fans of genre fiction.

Attempts at Living a Normal Life with Super Powers

I was weary of this book initially, I am not particularly a fan of collections of relatively stories. I tend to feel like not enough of the character was explored in each story and feel unsatisfied but that is not how I felt about this book. I was surprised by how well it worked for getting to know Adonis Morgan and a world trying cope where some people are born with super powers. I found that the narration of the audiobook, performed by Eric Weaver, was very well done with characters were distinctly voiced. After finishing this I was slightly disappointed that there weren’t more books on Adonis Morgan but this author, Frank Byrns, has definitely grabbed my attention.

Being super isn't always super

This is basically a series of five short stories about Adonis Morgan.  We learn through Adonis's struggles being a meta-human (the term for people with super powers) that being super ain't super for everyone.  I listened to all the stories in one go and each of the stories was equally interesting. They were well done enough and in chronological order so it felt like chapters in a book containing snippets of his life. There is some language in the book,  but I found it appropriate  to the story/characters.

The narrators voice was pleasant to listen to and matched my perception of the character from his descriptions and actions. Female characters were voiced well and convincingly. It was easy to tell characters apart and the pacing was decent.  As a whole, It was a good listening experience.

Overall, an entertaining listen with a good match between story and narrator. Normally I'd rate this 4 stars since I found myself wishing there was a bit more story. However, I wished this mostly because I had gotten so engrossed in the stories. I ended up re-listening to it while stuck in traffic the day after first finishing it (I had plenty of books loaded, but this was conveniently separated into short stories). The second time through it was still enjoyable, therefore it gets bumped up to 4.5.

Great character this Adonis Morgan.

This was a nice angle on the meta-human superhero story. Great character this Adonis Morgan. I love how you get to view the normal life of this kind of publicly shy hero, it made the human stand out in "superhuman". I did find it a bit short because I was really into it when it ended. Not to say the ending was bad, it was greatly resolved, I just wanted more. I think that's a good thing.
The only negative I have is about the narration. I felt rushed. I got the feeling the narrator had a time constaint and had to blurt out the entire book in a hurry. It took a while to feel comfortable with the speedy wording.

Actual rating 3.5 stars :)

Superheroes and superpowers of any kind always grab my attention, so I was excited to listen to this one. It was different, made up of five short stories about our main character's escapades. I have some conflicting feelings about this book. Part of me really liked the short story format, and another part of me didn't. Either way, I just felt like maybe something was missing. I definitely wanted more back story, more world building, and a little longer of a book. Unfortunately this genre has so many major books and movies that it's harder to stand out. Although I had some small issues with this book, I did enjoy the story. I'm not sure if this is to be part of a series or not, but I would check it out to get more of the story.

If you like superheroes, then you'll love this

If you could sum up Adonis Morgan in three words, what would they be?

trouble seeks superhero!

What was one of the most memorable moments of Adonis Morgan?

There were several. But the part that stands out the most to me is where he is framed for murder.

Which character – as performed by Eric Weaver – was your favorite?

Adonis for sure, but the narrator was very good.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Definitely, and I did.

Any additional comments?

No complaints, good read. I do wish it were longer.
