Excellent! Couldn't put it down.

I read lots of reviews on this (on Goodreads etc) before purchasing it. Some hated it, those wanting lots of detailed sex, and those for whom the sleazy context and incidents were too much. I was struck by the reviews of many readers who have lived in Bangkok and recognised this as an accurate account. Although the characters were not richly drawn insofar as we learned little about them other than what was happening day-to-day and their views on it. However, this did not detract from the story at all. This was all about exploring the psychosocial relationships in and around the sex industry in Bangkok. I don't Like spoilers and I won't give them here. Suffice to say that Pete was a somewhat sympathetic character early on, but for me, later, not so much. Joy, on the other hand seemed entirely predatory at first, but later I had learned enough to see that her motivation was not malicious. This book is entertaining, gripping, often uncomfortable listening/reading, but more thought provoking and illuminating than anything I have read or listened to before. The ending is not predictable and the narration is perfect.

Loved it, a real eye opener!
Having only visited Thailand once before I have to say I must have had my eyes closed I saw nothing of the content of this book however, after discussing with a friend who travels there twice a year it seems this is a realistic overview of all that unfolds in this well narrated story. ✳️✳️✳️✳️✳️

Not great... bit dull and repetitive actually
Kept thinking something interesting must happen soon, and suddenly it was the end of the book!
The main character is incredibly stupid and very frustrating to hear about. It was an odd book, first one of Stephen Leathers I haven’t liked at all..
Good narration from both narrators though!

I very nearly stopped listening to this book after a short time as it was so different from the authors other titles, of which I have read many. However, I am glad I didn't as I it turned out to be very good, albeit unusual. I did not see the ending coming !!

Nearly didn’t buy it - wish I hadnt
What would have made Private Dancer better?
Not sticking with it all the way through - I don’t give up on a book - I should have this one
What will your next listen be?
Don’t know - been put off at the moment!
Who might you have cast as narrator instead of David Thorpe and Jilly Bond ?
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Private Dancer?
Most of them

Repetition Repetition and a lame story

An enjoyable listen
Listening on Audible it was more like a play than a regular book. I enjoyed the variety of voices and it was easy to distinguish between the male characters.
The author may have been trying to show Joy’s limited vocabulary but I was irritated by the repetition of phrases. Otherwise a good listen and a sad insight into bar girls and male tourists and expats.
