Mitchell is a native of Nahant, Massachusetts and worked in the film industry and for 12 years as a stay-at-home dad before becoming a novelist. In July of 2021, he and Dr. Melinek moved with their family from their home in San Francisco to Wellington, New Zealand, where she performs autopsies and they continue to write essays and books together.
