Steve Wynalda was a military brat, born at an army hospital in Washington state. Shy and a nerd, Steve grew up as fodder for bullies and a pariah to girls. Life changed for him at 14, when Steve entered a writing contest and won. Steve's English teacher gushed with praise in front of his classmates (which didn't improve his reputation, but did grant him a measure of confidence) and forced him to read his work for his middle school graduation. While his classmates snickered and made fart sounds, there was one dark-haired beauty who actually listened and, at the end of his reading, smiled. The Writing Bug sank his fangs into Steve that day. In fact, if you look at his photo and tilt your head just right, you can still see the Bug hanging from Steve's eyebrow, snickering hoarsely in his best Muttley imitation. And Steve spent the decades since striving to make that moment in the sun permanent. He became a newspaper reporter hoping to make a living. When his paycheck said otherwise, he turned wrenches for the Navy and later became an x-ray technologist, all to feed his family while he fed the Bug on the side. He won more awards and published poetry and short stories, one of which was nominated for the prestigious Pushcart Prize. Eventually he evolved into a novelist and best-selling author. And while dark-haired beauties no longer smile at him (which his wife appreciates), the Bug still won't let go. May he never.
