Samuel J. Mann, MD is a nationally known Hypertension Specialist, Professor of Clinical Medicine at NewYork Presbyterian Hospital – Weill Cornell Medical Center in New York, N.Y, where he combines clinical practice and research. His papers have been published in leading hypertension, medicine and psychology journals. He is author of 3 books: 1. Hidden Within Us: A Radical New Understanding of the Mind-Body Connection (published April 2022) LITERARY TITAN GOLD BOOK AWARD June 2023 - Decades of mind/body research focused on the day-to-day stress and emotional distress we encounter have led to little progress in understanding or treating medical conditions. In his new book, Hidden Within Us, Dr. Mann offers a rarely considered understanding, focusing on the powerful emotions that we are not even aware of, because, unknown to us, we have repressed them. His 3 main points: 1) repression is not psychopathology; it is a gift of evolution, a crucial, yet not widely recognized component of emotional resilience; 2) repressed emotions, though unfelt, cause or contribute to many medical conditions, and 3) this understanding offers new pathways to treatment and healing. 2. Hypertension and You: Old Drugs, New Drugs and the Right Drugs for Your High Blood Pressure (2012). - We have many effective drugs to treat hypertension, but they are not being prescribed as well as they could be, with the very common consequences of uncontrolled hypertension and avoidable side effects. In very understandable language, Dr. Mann explains what is wrong with how they are being prescribed, and how to get it right. It is must reading for anyone taking medication for hypertension. 3. Healing Hypertension: A Revolutionary New Approach (Wiley, 1999). - Focusing on the mind/body connection in hypertension, the book explains why the usual suspects, stress, anger and anxiety, are not a cause of hypertension, and presents a very different understanding.
