John is a retired interpersonal communication teacher and trainer who taught for 32 years at The University of Washington and served as Vice President for Academic Affairs at the University of Dubuque. His most recent book is DISMANTLING RACISM ONE ON ONE: UNIQUENESS NARRATIVE EQUITY (2023). Unlike most DEI works, this one focuses on interpersonal as contrasted with systemic racism. In 2017, John published PERSONAL COMMUNICATING AND RACIAL EQUITY: A HUMANE TECHNHOLOGY FOR DEVELOPING ANTI-STEREOTYPING RELATIONSHIPS WITH PEOPLE WHO ARE DIFFERENT FROM YOU, rev. ed. This book provides nine steps for accomplishing what the title promises. John’s book U&ME: COMMUNICATING IN MOMENTS THAT MATTER New and rev. ed. (2014) demonstrates the effectiveness of communicating that is “as personal as possible” and offers specific skills to empower readers to meet this goal. John also edited 11 editions of BRIDGES NOT WALLS: A BOOK ABOUT INTERPERSONAL COMMUNICATION and coauthored TOGETHER: COMMUNICATING INTERPERSONALLY. He lives in Iowa with his wife, Becky and enjoys reading, cooking, and watersports.
