JANET CLARK SHAY is a freelance writer and the author of Growing Beyond Small Talk: Discover Practical Skills for Meaningful One-on-One Conversation and Overcome Personal Communication Insecurity. Janet has always been passionate about writing. Born in Colorado, she spent most of her elementary school years in Redondo Beach, California, and graduated from high school in Kansas. She attended Fort Hays State University and Emporia State University in Kansas, pursuing a major in Education and a minor in Journalism. She complemented her writing with other creative pursuits, completing faux finish training in Louisville, KY, and Trompe l'oeil courses at the American Academy of Decorative Arts in Scottsdale, AZ. Janet obtained her first job in journalism by writing a column for her rural town’s weekly newspaper while still in high school. Since then, she has had short stories published in magazines, penned numerous programs for church performances and a children’s audiobook, as well as invested time in advertising and graphic design training. She additionally taught art to youth for 15 years. Janet has divided her time between nonfiction, story writing, and creative pursuits. Her aim has always been to help others reach their full potential—both through artistic expression and communication—and she wants to empower people with the skills they need to understand each other. One of her strongest passions lies in communication. Her love of conversation and her deep desire to help others improve their communication skills inspired her to write Growing Beyond Small Talk. Having seen how many people struggle with skills like starting and sustaining conversions, she sought to help others understand that you don’t need to be a “natural-born” speaker to be a great communicator. In fact, acing the art of communication simply involves honing specific skills—including that of being a great listener. Janet is aware of the importance communication has for one’s professional and personal life, and her goal is to boost greater understanding between people through her work. Janet has written two inspirational adult biographies: The Prayer That Makes a Difference and This Side of Heaven: One Man’s Journey to Spiritual Sight. These works are especially close to her heart, as they reinforce the power of prayer and focus on the importance of a personal walk with Jesus Christ.
