Publisher's summary

From the New York Times best-selling author of the Survivor's Club novels comes "an epic love story" (Publishers Weekly) of intrigue and deception and the promises that can break a heart...

"I will love you all my life and even beyond that." Even at 15, Jeanne, the privileged daughter of a royalist EmigrE, knew what she liked: Englishman Robert Blake, bastard son of a marquess. Yet his questionable birth rendered him forbidden. Forced to part, they were still young enough to believe in tomorrow. But as time passed, that brief ephemeral flirtation at Haddington Hall faded into memory.

Eleven years later in Portugal, during the Peninsular Wars, they meet again, both of them spies, and destined to be working on opposing sides. He is now a captain with the British army. She is the widowed Marquesa das Minas - sometimes going by the name Joana da Fonte. However for only one of them does the flicker of recognition still burn. Amid the fury of war and in the shadow of secrets, passion flares once again. But for Joana and Robert, each entrusted to a dangerous mission that demands deception, falling in love could be the most dangerous risk of all.

This could not have been written by Mary Balogh.!

Any additional comments?

I listened to this book for the first 3 1/2 hrs. I kept thinking that it had to pick up soon, this was Mary Balogh after all. I have read and listened to most of Mary Balogh's books and even when I was not completely happy with any book, none of then was as bad as this one is. If this book had been my introduction to Mary Balogh, I would not have ever tried another. That saddens me,,as I fear that may have happened to someone, and they might have missed the many wonderful books written by Mary balogh that so many of us have read and re-read over and over again. I am totally at a lost as to how this book was ever published.I am just thankful that I did not buy this in paperback which I could not have returned.

Couldn't bear to finish listening

I agree with the reviewer who wonders if this could have been written by Mary Balogh. Some of her books are so delicious but this one was so painful to listen to that I couldn't get past the first half. The "Heroine" is SOOOO annoying and the story line is so predictable that I kept wishing they would just get on with it and finish so I could move on to another story. This whole soldier series has been so lacking in the magic of Mary Balogh's other books but this one is definitely the worst. Makes me sad since I have loved many of her other books. If you like strong, compassionate heroines who work hard to overcome difficulties, this book is not for you. If you like a whiny, selfish, self-centered heroine who torments the hero for 14 hours of listening, then jump right in!

Love Mary Balogh but this was the worse

Would you ever listen to anything by Mary Balogh again?

Yes, I read all her books.

What does Rosalyn Landor bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

She is worth listening to. She portrays the characters very well.

Any additional comments?

I usually do not write comments but this time I felt the need to warn others. Usually the hero has the too big ego but this time it was the heroine. I love a strong female character but this one had no honor or respect for others. She is self-centered and beyond liking.

My Favorite Balogh Story is Better When You Hear It

I loved this story from the first time I read it many years ago. When I later wrote a comment on her web page praising this book she said thank you and added a comment (I'm paraphrasing here) that she pushed her own comfort level to write this book since it was more action oriented than her usual books.

I got excited when I saw that the book was now in the audiobook format. I bought it and then didn't play it for several months because I was afraid that I would be disappointed. I have finally played it and boy was I wrong. It's even better than i remembered.

The heroine is a strong woman who takes it upon herself to get revenge for her family's murder. The hero is a man who defied their societies low expectations and rose on merit from a stable hand to an officer at a time when commissioned officers usually bought their rank.

Don't get the negative reviews.

I enjoyed this different type of book from Mary Bqlogh. I honestly think a lot of the negative reviews toward the heroine just don't like assertive female characters. Rosalyn Landor's performance was fabulous as always.

How did author Mary Balogh mean names pronounced?

The primary character had changed her given name when she moved from England to live in Portugal. Wouldn't she have become Juana or Juanita, with a soft J sounding more like wah-nuh or zhah-nuh?
The narrator pronounces it with a hard J sound, as in jacks or Jones.
Would Portuguese people even use that sound for any name beginning with J?
Did this narrator or anyone from Recorded Books ask Mary Balogh what pronunciation she had intended?

My absolute favorite by Mary B.

This is hands down my favorite of Mary Balogh. Possibly because there is so much more than just the love story and even the love story part is more edgy and explicit than usual. Lots of twists and excitement.

Not Balogh’s Usual Style

Very slow moving, almost “tedious” listen. Narration is excellent, as Landor always is. I hope this is not indicative of the author’s new style going forward.

Word porn

Prolonged detailed descriptions of sex. Not what I expected and I hoped it would not continue. The story became dominated by this. So no more Mary Balogh books for me and I will be deleting any that I have already downloaded.
