Publisher's summary

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • Karin Slaughter, author of the bestselling Will Trent novels, is widely acclaimed as “one of the best crime novelists in America” (The Washington Post). Now she delivers her first stand-alone novel: an epic story of a city in the midst of seismic upheaval, a serial killer targeting cops, and a divided police force tasked with bringing a madman to justice.

Atlanta, 1974. It’s Kate Murphy’s first day on the job, and the Atlanta Police Department is seething after the murder of an officer. Before the day has barely begun, she already suspects she’s not cut out to be a cop. Her male uniform is too big, she can’t handle a gun, and she’s rapidly learning that the APD is hardly a place that welcomes women. Worse still, in the ensuing manhunt, she’ll be partnered with Maggie Lawson, a cop with her own ax to grind (and a brother and uncle already on the force)—a strategy meant to isolate Kate and Maggie from the action. But the move will backfire, putting them right at the heart of it.

Cop Town is an incredibly atmospheric nail-biter from the author the Huffington Post called an “exemplary storyteller” and “one of the great talents of the twenty-first century.”

great except for narrator

What did you love best about Cop Town?

Female leads! Great perspective on the 1970s and being a woman

What was one of the most memorable moments of Cop Town?

Kate's first day on the job and struggling to work in a uniform that doesn't fit.

What didn’t you like about Kathleen Early’s performance?

Early appears to be so concerned about delivering a performance that won't influence the listener's perceptions of the characters (that picture in our heads) that every line sounds almost the same. She risks nothing and delivers nothing.

Horrific beginning

If I didn’t know what great books Karen Slaughter writes, I wouldn’t have gotten past the beginning. Keep reading; it gets better and better.

Too long

Story started out great, about mid way through it started to drag and become repetitive, felt as if the author was trying to stretch the story to make it longer. Could have been 2 - 3 hours shorter. Enjoyed the epilogue.

I wish that Ms. Slaughter had made this into a on-going book series. The characters were well formed and the plot was interesting and entertaining. I'd listen to it again!

GOOD FOR AN AIRPLANE RIDE

Is there anything you would change about this book?

Good cop, bad cop. Not to much left to the story line after you figured that out.

Would you be willing to try another book from Karin Slaughter? Why or why not?

Probably not. I have too many unread books that I hope will have more substance.

Would you listen to another book narrated by Kathleen Early?

Narration was fine.

Was Cop Town worth the listening time?

Not really.

Girl power at its best!

Well-written story and well performed! Really enjoyed the character development and the pace of the book. Kate is a great character and I hope to read more about her.

interesting characters, but

a bit over the top. not too believable. I guess one can conceive the red necks could also. be cops but that says little about the higher ups.

Not a bad book but not super exciting either! The ending crept up very quickly and I was like.... Oh okay it's over, little disappointed.
